Preserving Abundance: Preserving Plant Power with Leslie Young
Join us for a hands-on workshop on shelf-stable vegan food preservation led by Brightmoor neighbor and B’moor Nourished Free Pantry volunteer Leslie Young.
Leslie is a seasoned health and wellness advocate who specializes in holistic health practices. After navigating her own health challenges, she brings a grounded, practical perspective to the way food supports long-term wellbeing. Her workshops are interactive, welcoming, and built around the idea that everyone deserves access to the knowledge that keeps communities healthy.
Many in the neighborhood already know Leslie through her work with the B’moor Nourished Free Pantry, where she helps ensure healthy food reaches families in the community. She also shares her nutrition journey online—follow along at @plantpoweredleslie on Instagram.
In this class, Leslie will guide participants through practical methods for preserving plant-based foods so they remain shelf-stable, helping you make the most of seasonal produce, pantry staples, and bulk ingredients. You’ll learn techniques that reduce food waste, stretch your grocery budget, and keep nutritious options available year-round.
Whether you’re new to food preservation or looking to deepen your skills, this workshop is designed to make the process simple, empowering, and fun.
Come learn, connect, and leave with tools to turn abundance into lasting nourishment. 🌱

Preserving Abundance: The 360 of Food with Carla McClure
Join us for an engaging, hands-on workshop with Carla McClure, a dedicated organizer, grower, and advocate for healthy food access. Carla’s work is grounded in her personal experience with food insecurity, which shaped her belief that everyone deserves to feel welcomed, respected, and supported as they nourish themselves and their families.
Carla manages a weekly community food pantry and teaches the “360° of Food” workshop series in homes, churches, and community spaces. Her classes explore the full life cycle of food—from seed selection and growing practices to harvesting, preparation, and long-term preservation—all grounded in a “food as medicine” philosophy.
In this interactive workshop, Carla will guide participants through research-based, safe food preservation techniques, focusing on canning and dehydrating seasonal produce. Participants will learn step-by-step methods for water-bath, pressure, and steam canning, proper equipment handling, and current food safety standards so they can confidently preserve foods at home.
Carla brings extensive training and practical expertise to her teaching. Her certifications include programs through Michigan State University Extension, ServSafe, and the Produce Safety Alliance, along with advanced training as a Master Gardener and organic farmer. She also holds multiple food pantry and food safety certifications that support her work managing community food distribution.
With over 30 years as a grower and food enthusiast, five years specializing in food preservation, and years of community education experience, Carla combines hands-on demonstrations, practical guidance, and community-centered learning to make complex skills accessible to everyone.
This workshop will help participants:
• Reduce food waste
• Preserve local produce safely
• Extend household food budgets
• Build skills that strengthen family and community food security
Come learn how to buy, grow, prepare, and preserve food economically and safely—and leave with the knowledge to turn fresh harvests into nourishing pantry staples that last. 🌿

Preserving Abundance: Mastering Food Dehydration with Chef Nichol Talley
Join us for a practical, hands-on workshop introducing the art and science of food dehydration. While the process can take time, learning how to dehydrate foods properly can save money, reduce food waste, and transform fresh harvests into long-lasting ingredients for everyday meals.
Participants will learn how to turn fresh and frozen fruits, vegetables, and herbs into shelf-stable snacks and versatile meal additions. The class will also explore how dehydration can provide an alternative way to preserve foods that are often kept frozen—an especially useful skill during power outages or emergencies, when freezers can quickly become unreliable.
During this session, participants will learn:
• Essential food safety protocols for dehydration
• How to properly dry fruits, vegetables, and herbs
• Techniques for dehydrating foods that are typically frozen
• How to test for doneness, apply conditioning methods, and prevent spoilage
• Best practices for long-term storage to maintain quality and safety
By the end of the workshop, attendees will leave with the knowledge and confidence to safely preserve foods at home and build a pantry that supports long-term food security and resilience.
The workshop is led by professionally trained culinary artist, chef, and gardener Nichol Talley who brings a background in food safety and community food systems. A longtime food justice advocate, she has volunteered for more than two years with a local organization that operates a year-round weekly food distribution program. Nichol also serves on the board of Voices for Earth Justice, helping steward a community garden where they have hosted interactive cooking demonstrations. Many in the community may also recognize Nichol from a previous hands-on workshop at Brightmoor Artisans Collective on seasonal comfort foods.
This class is ideal for anyone looking to stretch their food budget, reduce waste, and learn practical preservation skills that make the most of seasonal abundance.
Come learn how a simple process—removing water—can turn today’s harvest into tomorrow’s meals. 🌿🥕

Preserving Abundance: Herbal Mocktails with Jaquetta Javonie Lee
Join us for a refreshing, hands-on workshop where participants will learn to craft safe, delicious, wellness-focused mocktails using fresh ingredients and aromatic herbs. In this interactive food safety class, you’ll create vibrant non-alcoholic drinks that are as nourishing as they are beautiful—perfect for gatherings, everyday hydration, or simply treating yourself to something special.
Participants will experiment with fresh fruits, garden herbs, and natural flavor combinations to create beverages that support wellbeing while celebrating creativity in the kitchen. Along the way, we’ll explore how simple ingredients can be transformed into drinks that feel both indulgent and restorative.
This workshop is led by a passionate gardener, farmer, and cooking instructor with more than a decade of experience teaching cooking classes throughout Detroit. Much of this work centers on helping families reconnect with their food—especially through teaching students about nutrition, sustainable growing practices, and cooking from scratch.
In this workshop, students learn not just how to cook, but why fresh ingredients matter, often using produce grown in their own gardens. Enjoy the spirit of practical, joyful learning in this mocktail workshop.
In this class, you’ll learn how to:
• Combine herbs, fruits, and natural ingredients to build complex flavors
• Create refreshing, alcohol-free drinks for gatherings and everyday life
• Explore simple techniques that make healthy drinks feel special

Come mix, taste, and connect—because sometimes the best conversations start with a really good drink. 🍓🌿🥂
